![]() ![]() After extensive conversations with Bob Martin, president and CEO, he concluded that THOR was genuinely interested in committing to protect the Tiffin brand and reputation while growing the company. ![]() Papa Bob’s study of the situation led him to THOR Industries. ![]() While we were financially strong with a sterling reputation for producing the best Class A motorhomes in our price points, the future was cast for competition against far larger corporations and holding companies with much deeper pockets. With guidance from my dad and Papa Bob, I had the experience of building a successful company from the dirt, with seemingly endless days that began at 4 a.m.Īs large corporations and holding companies continued to acquire motorhome and towable manufacturers, Tiffin Motorhomes became the “last man standing” of the many familyowned companies who had built this industry. Soon after, he and my dad, Van Tiffin, backed the opening and development of the fifth-wheel plant in Burnsville, Mississippi, where I took a leadership role as general manager. I returned to earn an MBA in hospital management at the University of Alabama–Birmingham.Īfter a brief three-year career in hospital management, Papa Bob persuaded me to come home to work at TMH. Several years later I place kicked for Alabama and earned a degree in business administration. I often visited in Red Bay and made the rounds with him through the assembly plant. After I got my learner’s permit, he let me drive his 1940 Packard Coupe and 1959 Ford Fairlane. I made the team in Muscle Shoals when I went out for football in the ninth grade. When my dad began teaching me to place kick, Papa Bob bought 25 new footballs for me to use in practice. We took a trip in that motorcar in May 1993 and stopped at the Brushy Creek trestle where Papa Bob took a picture of JJ and me. When the Illinois Central closed their service to Red Bay, he bought a small M19 Fairmont Speeder motorcar with a one-cylinder engine that was used to check the rail lines. He likes to collect and tinker with about anything that has wheels on it. Papa Bob and JJ found the time to do special things with us. While growing up, my sister, Shelby, and I often had the privilege of spending Sunday afternoons after church at their house, receiving a lot of one-on-one attention. I am the oldest of Bob and Judy Tiffin’s grandchildren. ![]()
